Appreciation Post: StyleLikeU

Somehow, this mother-daughter duo's YouTube channel popped up in my recommendations. I'm so glad it did. StyleLikeU was started by Elisa and Lily. Elisa was a fashion stylist and her daughter Lily began to have self-esteem issues (like most of us do) seeing those "perfect" women her mother styled for magazine covers.

I will link their website and YouTube channel here. I highly recommend reading their story in their own words.

To sum up the videos, StyleLikeU invites people in the media, models, actors, moms, you name it, just strong people comfortable in their own skin, to answer questions like "When do you feel the most beautiful?" and "Why is your body a good place to be?" They talk about insecurities they still deal with and how they overcame insecurities from the past. While they talk and answer these questions, Elisa and Lily ask them to gradually take off all accessories and clothing except for their underwear. (it's not as weird as it sounds I promise) You are left with the person. Not their scarf or hat, the person. The point is to show that you are not your clothes. People will make assumptions about your personality based on your style, but style does not reveal anything about a person really except where they like to shop.

It is refreshing to hear how these people found strength and beauty in their skin. The videos I watched were probably the most encouraging videos I have seen in a long time. When you see people, society has programmed us to put them in one of two categories. Pretty or not pretty. And that is so damaging. These videos show people of all sizes, ethnicities, ages, SO much diversity. And when you see them and hear them share their thoughts, nothing matters except who they are.

That is the whole point of StyleLikeU. As you'll see on their website, it says "True style is self acceptance." Also, every video starts with words on the screen saying "style is not the clothes you wear, it's what's underneath."

Whether you have self-esteem issues or not these videos are so inspiring. If any of you watch them let me know! Leave some comments on a post and tell me what you think!

I will also link some of my favorite videos here!
